Screen Printing Materials

A list.

Paper!

All kinds of paper work well for screen printing - the easiest to print is thick, smooth and uncoated. The more, the better. Waste paper found in the trash (check out a copy shop!) is wonderful for test prints. Lots of places to find thrown-out paper. And hey, paper usually has two sides! Anything flat and fairly pourus is useable though - feel like experimenting with old rolls of wallpaper or found canvas/drop cloth? Bring it in and we'll check it out.

Shirts!

If you want to print on fabric, shirts sure are an obvious material to print on. Some other good ideas are scraps to make patches out of (or to make test prints of your designs).

Tape!

We use tape a lot in screen printing. Some helpful types are: masking tape and duct tape (to tape our screens up and to use as guides), scotch tape for burning and fixing pin holes and tape to put our beautiful work all over the walls. Tape can get expensive! Let's remember to conserve!

Paper Towels!

Paper Towels suck! They're expensive and can be used in a very wasteful manner. But, they can be useful, sometimes. Having a few on hand is a good idea, but we'd rather you get:

Ink!

This class will be using ink that is water-based only. This ink is easily found in art supply stores, or made from acrylic paint (we'll go over as to how). There's also alternatives to these ready-made inks, if you want to explore that.

Specialty Stuff - Emulsion, Screen Filler, Drawing Fluid

Emulsion can be costly and wasteful, if you're only planning on burning a few screens (there's sometimes a shelf-life of weeks/months of the material). Screen filler and drawing fluid also last FOREVER, so buying a bottle for just this class may be overboard. We'll need these materials, but we're going to talk about how we can get them a little cheaper - perhaps buy in bulk for a cheaper price, or share materials with each other? We'll talk in class about this.

Spray Tack

Useful, but expensive. Not something I would require, but it has its place. We'll talk more about this stuff.

Squeegees!

These will be provided, but feel free to bring your own, if you have some - it'll make it easier to share the materials we've got. You may want to purchase your own.
